Ashton Road buzzing with refurbishment activity

25 April 2008

Dozens of homes and shops on Ashton Road in Hathershaw are getting a new lease of life, thanks to Housing Market Renewal funding. The works will improve the appearance of this important gateway to Oldham.

Landscaping works will transform a piece of land opposite Copsterhill Road, which forms the Hathershaw North gateway to the town. The derelict piece of land, which was once the site of a row of terraced houses, will form a landscaped area for people to sit and relax. The site will also incorporate a colourful sculpture designed by children from Broadfield School.

Further down Ashton Road external refurbishment works are continuing to people’s homes. The repairs include the rebuilding of boundary walls, brick cleaning and gutter replacements.  Also there has been some tarmacing of alleyways in this area to ease resident’s access.

The external works aim to enhance the appearance of properties in the area and help stabilise the housing market. To help improve the environment further, new green spaces are being developed along Ashton Road.

A similar package of refurbishments has started on Broadway Street, as part of the Hathershaw North improvements and work is ongoing to create colourful safe routes to school through signs and pavement art.

Shopping on Ashton Road is becoming a better experience; the premises from 312 to 326 now have new roofing and new rendering at front and rear with new shop fronts and roller shutters installed.

Surveying of the premises from Neild Street down to the Greaves Arms, which forms the next phase of the programme, should take place in April with works starting towards the end of May.
