Signs of regeneration
21st November 2006

Smart new street signs are being installed in Housing Market Renewal areas in Derker and Werneth/Freehold in Oldham.
Local residents helped to design the colourful mosaic inspired signs at workshops held by the Community Links Team who are funded by HMR.
A total of 28 signs will soon appear in the two areas that are the focus of a multi-million pound investment plan to provide a better choice of housing and improved local environment.
The Oldham Rochdale Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder also funds community initiatives and projects involving local people.
Janice Latreche, Community Development Worker for Community Links, said: “We work on behalf of Housing Market Renewal on initiatives that encourage residents living in Derker and Werneth to be creative and get involved in their communities. These have ranged from working with school children on the history of the area and on artwork used in community parks. The groups really enjoyed sharing ideas for the signs and it’s great to see them having an impact in the community.”
Councillor Dave Hibbert, Oldham Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Regeneration and HMR Board Member, added: “The Housing Market Renewal programme is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about improving whole areas and offering more choice and quality to residents. Projects like the street signs encourage local people to take an interest in their local environment as part of this ongoing transformation.”
