Communities to get involved in plans to regenerate Alt and Sholver
17th July 2006
A special partnership has been set up to secure investment to improve areas of Alt and Sholver and local people are being urged to get involved.
The Alt and Sholver Partnership is holding two drop-in events for local people to take part in the first discussions about improving the two Oldham neighbourhoods.
The Partnership has been formed between local residents, Oldham Council, First Choice Homes and the Oldham Rochdale Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder.
Residents from Alt Tenants and Residents’ Association, the ARC Community Centre and Sholver Tenant Management Organisation have been involved in appointing specialist neighbourhood planners Deloitte MCS. The aim is to eventually create a blue-print for the areas to help attract major funding to improve the quality of life for local people.
Councillor Hugh MacDonald, Cabinet Member for Education and Leisure Services, is encouraging resident to come and give their views. He said: “This event will enable local residents to understand how the Alt and Sholver Partnership works and how they can influence future plans. It’s vital that as many residents as possible attend.”
St James ward Councillor Jackie Stanton added: “The early work of the Alt and Sholver Partnership has been really encouraging. If local residents respond, they will have a great opportunity to influence the future of both areas.”
The first event takes place in Sholver on Saturday 22 July at St Thomas’ School, Coleridge Road from 1pm – 4pm. The Alt event is on Monday 24 July at Alt Primary School from 4pm – 7pm.
Kevin Clarke, Project Officer for the Alt and Sholver Partnership, said: “No plans have been created; at this stage we are seeking suggestions from the communities about what they want to see happen. They are absolutely crucial to this process and we want them to be at the heart of any plans for their neighbourhoods.”
Free minibuses will be running between the bus terminus at Sholver Lane and the St Thomas’ School from 1pm and 4pm and 50 Cherry Avenue and Alt Primary School from 4pm to 7pm.
